The visit is possible through the event: Friday June 14th 6pm to Sunday June 16th 7pm. We recommend coming either to the event opening on Friday 6-8pm, enjoying the focused atmosphere of Saturday, or visiting the final ceremony and game demo session on Sunday 4.30-7 pm. You get to hear about mobile and other game prototypes utilizing carbon footprint- and climate data. Game prototypes are being developed during the weekend as a collaboration between game developer community and environmental experts.

Eko Game Jam connects environmental data with game developers and game artists. The Game Jam is organized by Avoin, a sustainable IT development association in partnership with Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, Finnish Environment Institute and Finnish Ministry of Environment. Those, interested in sustainability and game development can participate in the event online at Discord Eko Game Jam server world wide. 14-16 June the environmentalists and game developers gather together in Finnish cities Helsinki and Jyväskylä, there will be 50-100 participants onsite. The event aims to grow in the future especially online.
“For us it is exciting to get to know cultures around the world. So far our chats with online participants from Venezuela and Madagaskar have been fun. There is so much game making talent everywhere and it is stunning to find out how the open environmental data provided by Finnish institutions but also the open data of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC) gets gamified!”, says Otso Valta, chairman of Avoin.
The game prototypes created at Eko Game Jam utilize Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra’s and Finnish Environment Institute’s carbon footprint calculators and other environmental data that is free to use with open license. It is hoped that environmental data gets utilized more and more in games and other everyday life applications. Circular economy and renewable energy experts participate in the game jam among others and help teams to utilize data and co-ideate solution oriented and practical games.

Eko Game Jam yhdistää ympäristötiedon, pelikoodarit ja graafiset artistit. Pelijamin järjestää tietoalan kestävän kehityksen yhdistys Avoin ry yhteistyössä Sitran, Suomen ympäristökeskuksen ja ympäristöministeriön kanssa. Ympäristötiedosta ja pelisuunnittelusta kiinnostuneet voivat osallistua tapahtumaan verkon välityksellä ympäri maailmaa 14.–16.6.2019. Ympäristö- ja peliala kokoontuu yhteen Helsingissä ja Jyväskylässä, ja paikan päälle odotetaan noin 50–100 osallistujaa. Jatkossa tapahtuma kasvattaa kokoaan erityisesti internetissä.
“Keskustelumme muun muassa venezuelalaisen ja madagaskarilaisen osallistujan kanssa ovat olleet kiehtovia. Maailmassa on paljon lahjakkaita pelinkehittäjiä, joita suomalainen ympäristöosaaminen kiinnostaa”, sanoo Avoin ry:n puheenjohtaja Otso Valta.
Tapahtumassa luoduissa peliprototyypeissä hyödynnetään Sitran Elämäntapatestin ja Suomen ympäristökeskuksen Ilmastodieetin hiilijalanjälkilaskureita. Elämäntapatestin ja Ilmastodieetin laskurit on julkaistu avoimena datana ja niille toivotaan löytyvän käyttöä niin peleissä kuin muissakin arjen sovelluksissa. Yhdessä muun muassa kiertotalouden ja uusiutuvan energian asiantuntijoiden kanssa pelikoodarit hyödyntävät ympäristödataa ja ideoivat ratkaisukeskeisiä pelejä.
